Generation Genius Science Kit For Kids Overview
First, just what are these science kits anyway??
They’re subscription boxes designed for kids 9+ years old. For reference though, Carter is newly 7 and Charlotte is almost 4. BOTH kids enjoyed the kits tremendously. Carter is my engineer-in-the-making and had no trouble following along or understanding. Charlotte might not have picked up on the science concepts, but she enjoyed experimenting with assistance. As a former third grade teacher, I’d say these kits are perfect for that age group and up to be fairly independent. Younger kids can still enjoy them with more help.

Each monthly science box contains everything you need to conduct three experiments. These kits are the real deal! They’re created by Dr. Jeff, who has a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular & Structural Biology from UCLA. He is the creator of Generation Genius, which creates science videos used in 30% of all schools in the US to teach K-8 science. Now you can bring that same educational value into your home with WOW science experiments.

Generation Genius Science Kit For Kids Review
Here are a few highlights about why we loved this take home science kit.
- Each box comes with a unique video URL and password-protected access to watch an exclusive step-by-step video. Dr. Jeff shows your kids exactly what to do and explains the science too. There’s an “auto-pause” feature that stops the videos between steps, so convenient! I personally LOVED this, again as a teacher and a mom. It provided real educational value and gave my son a sense of independence to really lead the science experiment himself. I’m personally more into literacy than science (sorry, Dr. Jeff!), so it was super helpful to have someone else explaining exactly how/why the experiments worked. I learned something new too!
- All of the supplies you need are included in the box. We only had to add water. I love that I’m not running around collecting supplies or buying ingredients in large quantities, only to use a few drops.
- You can also do each experiment multiple times, which is a real bonus with multiple kids using each kit!
- Clean up was super easy. It comes with an “un-rippable” work mat (yes, my kids put that to the test) to protect your surface. I had pulled out our silicone craft mat to be safe, but we didn’t need it! When we finished, the liquid ingredients went right down the drain and the rest was easy to recycle.
- The kits are safe. The video includes a friendly reminder about not tasting anything, wearing your gloves and eye protection, etc. But nothing here is going to explode!
- The science kits are super affordable and come with a 30 day money back guarantee.
- Their website has several great science videos to extend the learning.
Generation Genius Science Kit 4
We’re sharing kit 4, which explores the properties of liquid.
The Disappearing Beaker
This one was very cool and ended up being Carter’s favorite. He learned about how materials with similar properties can make things appear invisible. He placed a beaker in the bottom of the cup, added oil, and MAGIC (okay, science) happened… the beaker disappeared! He was so amazed.

Then we repeated the experiment using different materials, GHOST CRYSTALS! Charlotte wasn’t a fan of how squishy they were.

The Goldenrod Paper
This one was so pretty and my personal favorite. We learn about the properties of liquid and how you can create a rainbow of colors based on pH. As a teacher, I also loved that fine motor practice.
First, the kids added six different types of liquid to the well. Once they added the indicator, the liquids made a rainbow. If you look closely, you’ll see the iPad has the instructional and explanation video playing.

Then they made handprints using indicator paper. I love how they BOTH looked at their hands afterward, expecting them to have turned red. Nope! Again, science.

Branching Colors
This was Charlotte’s favorite because girl loves art! The kids saw how simple ingredients can break surface tension to create colorful designs. First we used a thicker medium. This one tested their fine motor skills and patience to watch the science take place.

Then they repeated the the experiment using a thinner medium.

The entire kit took us about an hour to complete and they’re already asking when the next one arrives.
