I am so far behind on sharing our Kiwi Co crates, so I’m going to quickly share three in a row. Eek! First up is the KiwiCo mechanical sweeper.
As a quick recap, KiwiCo crates are age-appropriate boxes of activities curated to help parents and kids have fun learning at home. KiwiCo crates come in eight age ranges, from 0 all the way up to 104. Depending on the age, crates ship every month or every other month.
KiwiCo Mechanical Sweeper Kiwi Crate
Carter receives the KIWI crate for ages 5-8. This month’s crate worked on:
- Mechanics & Building
- Watercolor Painting
This crate was a mechanical sweeper, so it was great for STEM learning at home. It ALSO was in the form of a whale and talked about how whales eat, so we weren’t “just” learning about the mechanics of the sweeper, but also adding to Carter’s background knowledge of whales.
Literally everything you need is included in the box. It comes with all the materials, instructions, extension ideas, and a little informational magazine that Carter looks at over and over each month.
Carter always reads the directions first. I like that they are visual, so even though he isn’t reading all the words (we help him!) he can follow along with the sketches too. The sweeper has a whale that goes on each side. One side used regular watercolor painting, and the second one used salt to show how the salt absorbs some of the paint/color.
STEM Sweeper Project
While the whales dried, it was time to build the actual sweeper. Carter did most of it himself, but did benefit from an extra set of hands to help him hold everything in place. I find that KiwiCo crates are the perfect balance between independence and family time. Just look at the concentration on his face!
The finished project actually works! So many times when we grab kits like this at random places, they cause more frustration because they don’t stay together or work as intended. This one worked exactly as intended.
As always, you also get a little nonfiction magazine to extend the concepts. This one was packed with whale facts and extra extension ideas beyond the crate.
